River Falls - Gladys Grovum, 89, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999 at
Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 18 at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend William Kerr officiating. Reid Froiland was the organist, and the soloist was Mehgan Reed. Casketbearers were Paul Johnson, LeRoy Vigen, Lenny Helquist, Munro Poole, Larry Vigen and Larry Nelson. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery with the Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls in charge of the arrangements.
Gladys Selma Johnson was born on August 8, 1909 in Moylan township of Marshall county, the daughter of Peter and Bertha (Bagne) Johnson. She attended Mayflower country school in Moylan township. She moved to Hibbing where she attended school while living with relatives. For three years, Gladys worked as an LPN for Dr. Adkins at the hospital in Grygla.
On August 28, 1928 she was united in marriage to Gunder Grovum at the parsonage in Grygla. The couple lived in Grygla where they owned and operated a cafe for many years.
In 1938 they moved to Thief River Falls with their family and purchased The Club which they owned and operated. After their son Wally took over the business, Gladys continued to work there, retiring in 1988. Gunder died in 1975.
She enjoyed needlework, going to the lake, baking and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
Gladys is survived by two daughters, Marvel (George) VanRooy of Sun City, AZ and Donna (William) Reed of Thief River Falls; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Albert Johnson of Goodridge and Oscar (Verna) Johnson and Benhart Johnson, both of Thief River Falls; and one sister, Emma (Donald) Mack of Oklee.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Julia; three brothers, Elmer, Arthur and John; and two sons, Ronald in 1990 and Wallace in 1986. A00003B1999JN23
