Mankato
- Vienna Grondahl, 89, formerly of Holt, died Saturday, September 4,
1999 at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 10 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt with Rev. Nancy Werner and Rev. Robert Dahlen officiating. Yvonne Larson will be the organist, and special music will be provided by soloist Debra Jordt and Vienna's cousins.
Honorary casketbearers will be Orville Holen, Daryl Johnson, Mark Johnson, William Jordt, Richard Paulson and Brent Reichl. Casketbearers will be Loren Grondahl, Jerry McMillan, Matthew McMillan, Timothy McMillan, Allan Paulson and Troy Underberg. Burial will be in the Holt Cemetery in Holt.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Debra Jordt will officiate at the 7 p.m. prayer service.
Vienna Sylvia Tuura was born on October 21, 1909 at Cloquet, the daughter of John and Hilma (Wahaoja) Tuura. As an infant she was baptized into the Christian faith in Cloquet. When Vienna was three years old, the family moved to Middle River where she attended school and graduated from Middle River High School. Vienna also attended Valley State Teacher's College and taught in rural schools. She also taught in Holt and St. Hilaire, retiring in 1974.
In 1930, she was united in marriage to Oliver Grondahl at Fargo, ND, and in addition to Vienna's teaching career, the couple farmed in Holt township. After they retired from farming, they moved into the community of Holt.
She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Holt Keenagers and enjoyed the hobbies of knitting, crocheting and quilting.
Vienna is survived by one son, Dale (Lorraine) of Buffalo; three daughters, Eleanor McMillan of St. Cloud, Delphine Swan of St. Peter, and Sandra (Al "Lynn") of Salem, OR; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; one brother, Arne (Ione) Tuura of Middle River; two sisters, Helen (Dallas) Robertson of Norfolk, NE and Viola (Francis) Johnson of Holt; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver on November 18, 1984; two granddaughters, Wende Jo Swan and Emily Jordt; her parents; one brother, Toivo Tuura; six sisters, Lempi, Eli and Helga Tuura, Josephine Norgaard, Esther Monteith and Laina Wiiret; and one brother-in-law. A00003B1999SP08
