Clarence Grindeland, 94

Thief River Falls - Clarence "Poop" Grindeland, 94, died Thursday, August 3, 2000 at his home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sun-day, August 6 at Green Funeral Home Chapel in Thief River Falls with Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Carol Amund-son was the organist, and Joel Kezar was the soloist. Casketbearers were Chad Grindeland, Darrin Grindeland, Wade Grindeland, Wade Cleveland, Gary Cleveland, Shawn Armstrong, Tim Grindeland, Tim Grindeland, Todd Grindeland, Larry Barnier and Christopher Barnier. Honorary casketbearers were all of Clarence's granddaughters. Burial was in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Clarence Orlando Grindeland was born on February 12, 1906 in Hatton, N.D., the son of Henry and Sarah (Thompson) Grindeland. He later moved with his family to Thief River Falls. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church and attended school in Thief River Falls.

He began working for the Soo Line Railroad in 1924, continuing for 49 years until 1973 when he retired as an engineer.

On April 16, 1932, Clarence was united in marriage to Gertrude O'Hara in Thief River Falls. Except for two years when they lived in International Falls, the couple resided in Thief River Falls all of their lives. Gertrude died on June 13, 1996.

Clarence enjoyed training horses and dogs, spending time at his farm and tending his yard and house. He also enjoyed spending time with family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was the oldest of the "old Soo Line people" living in the Thief River Falls division and one of the last surviving charter members of the Eagles. He was also a member of the Locomotive Firemen and Engineers.

Clarence is survived by two daughters, Patricia Eide of Mesa, Ariz. and Terese (special friend Sonny Sjulestad) Armstrong of Goodridge; three sons, John "Jack" Grindeland of Thief River Falls, Glenn (Joan) Grindeland of Burnsville and Thales "Babe" (Paulette) Grindeland of Thief River Falls; 16 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Ernest, Gilman and Willis Grindeland; and six sisters, Anna Johnson, Grace Toomey, Evelyn Helgeson, Orpha Ryan, Sylvia Cost and Helma Johnson. A00003B2000AG09
