Bernard Garthus, 88

Holt - Bernard Garthus, 88, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Karlstad Healthcare Center in Karlstad.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m on Tuesday, May 23, at Garthus Obit color Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt with Rev. Jay Borchert officiating. Yvonne Larson was the organist. Soloist Donald Lunke was accompanied by his daughter, Brenda Lunke. Casketbearers were Bernard's grandchildren: Jody Lunke, Leone Johnson, Barbara Lorentzen, Miles Garthus, James Garthus, Wayne Garthus, Dean Garthus, Lowell Engen, Donald Engen and Steven Engen. Honorary casketbearers were great-grandchildren and friends. Interment was in Holt Cemetery in Holt with the Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Bernard "Ben" Oliver Garthus was born on January 26, 1912 in Mud Lake township of Marshall county, the son of Ole and Karen (Johnson) Garthus. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. The family lived in Mud Lake township until Bernard was 12 years old, and they moved to Duluth. Bernard moved back to the Holt area in 1929.

On June 22, 1934, he was united in marriage to Helen Monson at Thief River Falls. He farmed most of his life and also worked at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge for 12 years.

He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and enjoyed working with horses, gardening and hunting.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Helen of Holt; two sons, Jay (Carol) Garthus of Middle River and Kenneth Garthus of Newfolden; one daughter, Dorothy Engen of Thief River Falls; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Joe; one daughter-in-law, Janet Garthus; three brothers, Oscar, Dedrick "Dick" and George; and one sister, Clara. A00003B2000MY24
