
Halma - John I. Folland, 78, died Sunday, November 16, 1997 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at the Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Halma with Pastor Gary Halverson officiating. Kirstin Olson will be the organist, and vocal music will be provided by Lola Germundson and Dean Johnson. Casketbearers will be John's grandsons, Kragh Olson, Lowell Harvey, Brett Folland, Jeremy Folland, Kris Folland and John Folland. Military honors will be afforded by the Halma-Lake Bronson American Legion Post 315. Burial will be held at Eidsvold Cemetery in Halma. The Collins Funeral Home of Karlstad was in charge of the arrangements.
John Irwin Folland was born September 28, 1919 in Pelan township near Halma, the son of Isaac O. and Annie (Hennison) Folland. He was baptized and confirmed at the Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Halma where he remained a life-long member. He attended the former Webster School near his home and the Agriculture College in Crookston.
John served as a signalman with the US Navy during World War II, and following his discharge in 1946 he returned to Halma.
On April 23. 1949 John was united in marriage to Ruth Holter Eddy at Hallock. They have since farmed in Norway and Pelan townships near Halma and operated a Grade A dairy farm.
John held various offices with the Halma-Lake Bronson American Legion Post, served as Norway township assessor, and served on the boards of the local telephone company, Halma Creamery, Extension Committee and the Karlstad Farmers Elevator. In 1957 John was honored as Kittson County Soil and Water Conservation farmer, and in 1974 John and Ruth were named Valley Farmer and Homemaker of Kittson County.
John is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Marilyn Marvin of Grand Forks, ND and Jeanne (Dexter) Harvey of Winnipeg, Man.; two sons, Michael (Beverly) Folland of Karlstad and Jan Marc Folland of Sauk Centre; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Lee (Joydis) Folland of Halma and Arthur (Rosa) Folland of Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Alice Williams of Seattle, WA; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Agnes Jenson and Mildred Folland; and one brother, Harold Folland.
