Carl Flaten, 73

Middle River - Carl Flaten, 73, died Thursday, November 5, 1998 at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 9 at the Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with Reverend Gerald Khran officiating. Jim Fugleberg was the organist. Casketbearers were Wayne Tweeten, Shawn Tweeten, Eddie Johnson and Mitch Walski. Burial was in Community Cemetery in River Falls township of Pennington County.

Carl A. Flaten was born on December 9, 1924 in Pelan, the son of Richard and Olga (Kallhusen) Flaten. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and attended school in Roseau. Following school Carl entered the U.S. Army.

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Schaffer in 1949. Carl was employed by the Soo Line Railroad, worked in maintenance at the Lavender Inn and Carlton College in Faribault and owned and operated a pool hall in Mahnomen. For the past two years Carl resided in Middle River.

He enjoyed swimming, baseball and playing horseshoes.

Carl is survived by two daughters, Betty (Dennis) Erickson of Warroad and Barb (Gary) Anderson of Thief River Falls; three sons, Robert D. Flaten of Oklee, Roger (Marlene) Flaten of Crookston and Carl W. Flaten of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren; one sister, Clara R. Johnson of Thief River Falls; and a half sister, Emma Flaten of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; his parents; one son, Richard Allan Flaten; one daughter, Beverly Jane Flaten; three sisters, Cora Spilde, Gladys Perreault and Mary Peterson; one brother, Melvin Flaten; and one half sister, Olga Nygaard.
