Melvin Engen, 88, died Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at a nursing
home in Dickinson, N.D.
Services will be
held in the spring with military rites provided by the Thief River
Falls American Legion and VFW Posts. Green Funeral Home of Thief
River Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
Melvin William Engen was born on October 4, 1912 in Marshall county, the son of William P. and Caroline (Grund) Engen. He was baptized into the Christian faith on November 10, 1912 at Warren. He attended rural schools at Warren and Pitt.
On April 30, 1942, Melvin entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling. He worked as an airplane and engine mechanic in the 334th Bomb Squadron 95th Bombers Group. He served during the air offensive in Europe, Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe, earning the rank of sergeant. He was honorably discharged on September 23, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
Following his service in the United States Army, Melvin lived in various veterans homes in Minnesota and North Dakota. In 1992, he moved to Dickinson, N.D. where he had since resided.
Survivors include a brother, Ronald (Marie) Engen of Thief River Falls; and three sisters, his twin Myrtle Andeen of Wahpeton, N.D., Grace Haack of Minneapolis and Audrey Freshwater of Fresno, Calif.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clayton, Paul, Vernon and Eldor Engen; and two sisters, Doris Gibson and Eunice Krueger. A00003B2000FB07
