Russel Embury, 85

Thief River Falls - Russel Embury, 85, died Monday, October 26, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 30 at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend William Kerr officiating. Grace Hammer was the organist, and Judith Lawrence was the soloist. Casketbearers were Tony Dorn Jr., Tom Goddard, Clark Hendrickson, Robert Kalass, John Autio, Stan Wilson Jr., Buzz Marvin and Mark Embury. Honorary casketbearers were Tony Dorn Sr., Cal Marvin, Jarvis Prichard, Dr. Earl Dagg, Dick Bjorkman, Lowell Swenson, John Peterson, Wallace Tunberg and Jim Womack. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Russel Stanley Embury was born May 3, 1913 in Kenyon, the son of Howard and Amanda (Kispert) Embury. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and attended school in Rochester and graduated from Rochester High School.

He was united in marriage to Beatrice L. Van Oss on April 25, 1938 at Stillwater. He served in the U.S. Army stateside during World War II.

Russel worked in management for the Arthur L. Roberts Hotel chain from 1938 until 1943 and in sales for the American Hardware Mutual Insurance Company from 1943 until 1978.

He was a member of the Rotary International, Elk's Club, United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and Shriners, American Legion and 40 et 8 and Ducks Unlimited. Russel served as president of the Thief River Falls Golf Club, manager of the Thief River Falls Thieves hockey team and director of the States-Dominion Hockey League.

Russel is survived by his wife, Beatrice; one son, Dr. Stephen (Kristine) Embury; four grandchildren; and one sister, Margie Baroni of Paris, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Kalass and Marion Zimmerman; and one brother, Allen Embury.
