 Paul Emanuel, 80

Fargo, ND - Paul Emanuel, 80, died Friday, December 17, 1999 at his home in Fargo, ND.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21 at Elim Lutheran Church in Fargo. The Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home of Fargo was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Emanuel was born on March 10, 1919 in Berthold, ND, the son of Harvey and Mildred (Frederickson) Emanuel. He graduated from Berthold High School in 1937 where he played varsity basketball for six years.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1937 and served as a coxswain on the first U.S. aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Ranger, until his discharge in 1941. Paul attended the University of Wisconsin for a short time before he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1945 during World War II. He served as a First Sergeant in France, Germany, Sicily, North Africa and Saipan, receiving the American Theater, European African Middle Eastern and Asiatic Pacific service medals. He landed in Normandy on D-Day and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Paul married Violet Marie Lileks in Highland Park, IL on July 17, 1943, and after the war they made their home in Fargo, ND. Paul worked as a turkey specialist in the poultry industry, retiring from Land O'Lakes in 1988.

Paul was honored by the North Dakota Poultry Industries and the Northern Growers Turkey Association for 40 years of service, and he served as a board member of the North Dakota Turkey Federation. In 1977 he was honored for distinguished service to the livestock industry at the North Dakota State University Harvest Bowl and honored again at the Harvest Bowl in 1989 by the North Dakota Turkey Federation, receiving the Outstanding Agricultural Pioneer Award.

He was a member of the Fargo American Legion for 50 years, the 40 et 8, the VFW and Elim Lutheran Church where he served on the church council.

Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf.

Survivors include his wife, Violet of Fargo; three sons, Drew (Marilyn) of Tamarac Lake, Kurt of Fargo and Dave (Margaret) of Crookston; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild. He was also godfather to four nieces and a nephew.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bruce Emanuel; and one sister, Verna Finke. A00003B1999DC22
