Goodridge - Carl "Carlie" Elg, 90, died Saturday, May 15, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 19) at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge with Reverend Robert Dahlen officiating. Margie Iverson will be the organist, and vocal music will be provided by Grace Hammer. Casketbearers will be Joe Bourgeois, Rollin Siegfried, Charles Russell, Dick Lamoureaux, Howard Sjulestad, Edward "Sonny" Sjulestad, David Sjulestad and Ivan Sjulestad. Burial will be in Star Cemetery in Star township of Pennington county.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.
Carl Edwin Elg was born on October 1, 1908 in Erie, the son of Carl and Evangeline (Payne) Elg. He attended school in Erie.
On October 26, 1939, he married Gertie Sjulestad. The couple lived in Bemidji, and Carl worked on the road at New York Mills. They moved to Star township in Pennington county where they operated the Erie Store. In 1945, they moved to Goodridge where Carl owned and operated Elg's Garage until he sold the business in the mid-1970's.
Carl was on the city council and was active in community affairs until the time of his death. For many years, he served as the mayor of Goodridge. His easy going nature afforded him many acquaintances, and his lifelong interest was trading.
Carl is survived his wife, Gertie of Goodridge; five daughters, Marlene (Dick) Lamoureaux of Redding, CA, Karen (Rollin) Siegfried of Eagan, Gladys (Joe) Bourgeois of Robbinsdale, Carol Weichert of Eagan and Audrey (Charles) Russell of Sacramento, CA; one son, LeRoy (Sharon) Elg of Sauk Rapids; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Evangeline Elg and Eva Hanson; four half brothers, Johnny Elg, Clifford Shosten, William Shosten and Anton Shosten; and five half sisters, Agnes Elg, Charlotte Elg, Myrtle Shosten, Edith Shosten and Pearl Shosten.
