
Thief River Falls - Harvey Dyrud, 91, formerly of Newfolden, died Sunday, June 14, 1998 at his home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 19 at Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden with Reverend LeRoy Flickinger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden.
Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 at the Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Thursday evening and at the church for one hour prior to services on Friday.
Harvey Paul Dyrud was born on July 24, 1906 near Climax, the son of Petter and Marie (Hanson) Dyrud. He was baptized at Climax. In 1915 the family moved to the Newfolden area where he attended schools in Viking and Newfolden. He was confirmed at Bethania Lutheran Church. Harvey graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo, ND in 1933.
On December 21, 1935 he was united in marriage to Myrtle Helene Rasmussen at rural McHenry, ND. The couple moved to a farm near Newfolden where they farmed for 60 years. They moved to Thief River Falls in 1996. In addition to farming, Harvey did road construction.
For many years Harvey had a personal ministry, visiting shut-ins and hospitals. He participated in church and community activities throughout his life, serving on the Newfolden School Board from 1946 to 1959, the New Folden township board and the Galilee Bible Camp board. He was also active in the Lutheran Laymen's Society and the Lutheran Tent Mission. For 17 years, he served as the Folden Church Sunday school superintendent and for 40 years as secretary of the Northern Lutheran Mission Association, participating in its mission work at Redby and White Earth. He was well-read and conversant in areas of history, geography and literature.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Myrtle; his 11 children, Harlan (Darlene) of Grand Forks, ND, Philip (Avis) of Middle River, Keith (Grace) of St. Paul, Faythe (Gordon) Thureen of East Grand Forks, David (Arleen) of St. Paul, Helene McCauley of Thief River Falls, Jonathan (Anh Ngoc) of St. Paul, Clifford (Alva) of Moorhead, Gracia (Robert) Blees of Tega Cay, SC, Rachel Dyrud of Minneapolis and Dwight (Christine) of Minneapolis; 35 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Edel Gast of Warren; one brother, Reverend Amos (Ovidie) of Minneapolis; a nephew raised by the Dyrud family, Sheldon (Mary) Mortrud of Lake Park; and a number of foster children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Mavis; his sisters and brothers, Karen Mortrud, Myrtle Bjornrud, Chester, Reverend Clemmence, Beatrice Rasmussen and Lorraine Dyrud; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
