Texas - Herbert H. Dill, 87, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at Rio
Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 5, at the Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes with Rev. Mark Kuether officiating. Anne Jorgenson was the organist, and Roland Sandman was the soloist. Casketbearers were Steve Helle, Mike Helle, Chris Helle, Bruce Pederson, Daniel Pederson and Joey Dill. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes. The West-Kjos Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes was in charge of the arrangements.
Herbert H. Dill was born on October 23, 1912 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Homer and Evelyn Dill. He received his education in Iowa and his degree from the University of Iowa.
He began his career as a wildlife biologist for the Department of the Interior. He was an expert on the Giant Canada Goose. He wrote a book and more than 50 scientific articles for publication. Herbert invented the Cannon-net-trap, a device for catching geese and other animals for the purposes of marking and study, and the tool was used in the Walt Disney movie, "The Footloose Goose." He established many wildlife refuges in Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, Illinois and Missouri.
Herbert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was married to Elizabeth Bestick of Detroit Lakes and after her death in 1974, married Hazel Dahlke in 1975.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel; one son, John Dill; three daughters, Patricia Pederson, Zoe Ann Helle of Thief River Falls, and Donna Kuda; two stepdaughters, Rosalind Menton and Teresa Ainsworth; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Elizabeth. A00003B2000MY17
