Joanne Deterling, 61

Fairmont - Joann Deterling, 61, a former resident of Thief River Falls, died Saturday, February 28, 1998 at her home in Fairmont after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor David Waterstradt. Cindy Ring was the organist. Casketbearers were Allen Deterling, Steve Schafer, Douglas Lund, Scott Maas, Dean Schneider, and Fred Schmidt. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home of New Ulm was in charge of the arrangments.

Joann Schneider was born on January 15, 1937 in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Rueben and Lillian Schneider. She was baptized and confirmed at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Sleepy Eye. Later, she was confirmed in the teachings of the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

On January 30, 1956 she was united in marriage to Harvey Deterling. Harvey and Joann were residents of Thief River Falls for a number of years while he was a fixed base operator and a flight instructor at the Thief River Falls regional airport. The couple made their home in Fairmont at the time of her death. She was a member of Shepherd of the Lakes Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairmont at the time of her death.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Deterling of Fairmont; two daughters, Lori (William) Sugden of Hallock and Lisa (Robert) Kresbach of Chaska; two grandsons; her mother, Lillian Schneider of Sleepy Eye; two sisters, Jean (Gary) Schafer of Lamberton and Janice (William) Maas of Fairmont; and one brother, Roger (Cindy) Schneider of Sleepy Eye.

She was preceded in death by her father.
