 Delphus Casavan, 83

Crookston - Delphus Casavan, 83, formerly of Red Lake Falls, died Wednesday, December 15, 1999 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.

Mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, December 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Rev. Tim Bushy officiating. Kathie Knott was the organist. Special music was provided by St. Joseph's Church Choir. Casketbearers were Gary Novak, Blair Gustafson, Everett Johnson, Todd Gustafson, Chuck Flage and Don Brown. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion Post of Red Lake Falls. Burial was in St. Dorothy's Catholic Cemetery in Dorothy with the Petterson Funeral Home of Red Lake Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Delphus Joseph Casavan was born on January 5, 1916 near Dorothy, the son of Cyprien and Olive (Boutain) Casavan. He was raised and attended school near Dorothy and was baptized and confirmed at St. Dorothy's Catholic Church.

On June 9, 1942 he entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II and honorably discharged on September 30, 1945.

Delphus farmed southwest of Red Lake Falls until 1965 when he retired and moved into Red Lake Falls.

On March 10, 1972 he was united in marriage to Nora Kolstrand in Red Lake Falls, and the couple worked at Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls until their retirement in 1981. Nora died on March 31, 1995. Delphus lived in Red Lake Falls until 1996 when he moved to Crookston. He had spent the last few months at Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston.

He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, fishing and hunting and was a member of the American Legion and VFW.

Delphus is survived by five sisters, Cora Hanson of Williamsburg, VA, Cecelia Thode of Red Lake Falls, Marie Lentze of Anchorage, AK, Doris Pahlen of Halstad and Gladys McGrath of Portland, OR; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence "Blackie" Casavan and Henry Casavan; and three sisters, Obilene Lizotte, Mabel Senske and Lilly Hanson. A00003B1999DC22
