James Carriere, 79

Middle River - James "Snooky" Carriere, 79, died Wednesday, September 15, 1999 at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 20 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Rev. John Jorgensen officiating. Lois Peterson was the organist, and special music was provided by Lois Anderson, Lois Peterson and Barb Geer. His grandchildren were the casketbearers. Interment was in Woodman Cemetery in Middle River with military honors accorded by the Middle River American Legion Post 444. The Collins Funeral Home of Middle River was in charge of the arrangements.

James Gerald Carriere was born on September 29, 1919 at Buhl, the son of Joe and Emily (Larson) Carriere. As a child he moved with his family to Middle River where he grew up and graduated from Middle River High School in 1936. "Snooky" was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He worked for his father at the Cities Services Station in Middle River which he later owned and operated.

On December 14, 1941 he was united in marriage to Mildred Nelson at Middle River. Snooky enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard th USS Chicago until it was sunk and then aboard the USS Mobile until the war ended in 1945. He then returned to Middle River where he owned and operated the station until 1968. After that time, he worked for Arctic Enterprises in Thief River Falls until 1977. Since June of this year, Snooky had resided at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Middle River, the Middle River American Legion where he served as financial officer, and the Thief River Falls VFW Post. He also served as the Middle River City Clerk for many years.

Snooky is survived by his wife, Mildred; three sons, James (Patty) of Fargo, ND; Lee (Wendy) of Middle River, and Mike (Lorna) of Warren; two daughters, Sheryl of Mission, TX and Kathy Austad of Maplewood; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Eva) of Foley; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray; and two sisters, Gladys Dunning and Clara Jacobs. A00003B1999SP22
