Lawrence Carpenter, 80

Plummer - Lawrence Carpenter, 80, died on Friday, May 1, 1998 at his home near Plummer.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer with Reverend Clarence Johnson officiating. Linda Olson provided special music. Casketbearers were Ferd DeHate, John Helley, Nick Brekke, Jim DuChamp, Donald Fallon and Terry Rewertz. Burial was in the Finnish Cemetery near Plummer.

Lawrence Carpenter was born on October 23, 1917 at Walhalla, ND, the son of Thomas and Clara (Keeling) Carpenter. His parents died when he was very young, and he was raised by relatives. Lawrence served in the military during World War II. Following his discharge, he lived in Forrest River, ND where he farmed. In the early 1950's he moved to Plummer where he farmed and raised dairy cattle. He served as a police officer for the city of Plummer for many years. After retiring from farming in 1970, Lawrence worked for the City of Plummer for 15 years under the Green Thumb program.

He was an American Legion lifetime member and served as commander in 1973-74. He retired from the Plummer Fire Department after 25 years and was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he also taught Sunday school.

Lawrence is survived by one brother, Leonard Carpenter of Rock Springs Canyon, MT and 11 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Clara Hultin; and one brother, Wallace Carpenter.
