George Burkel, 89

İİİGreenbush - George Burkel, 89, of Greenbush, died on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Greenbush Nursing Home in Greenbush.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church of Greenbush, with Father Don Braukmann, officiating.Casket Bearers included Don, George, Robert, Shawn, Mike and Joe Burkel.Interment was in Blessed Sacrament Cemetery at Greenbush.

George Joseph Burkel, the son of Peter and Rose (Kulas) Burkel was born on March 7, 1915 in Greenbush.He grew up and attended school in Greenbush. He marred Eva Keho in 1937 in Roseau.They farmed in Greenbush and raised turkeys. He owned and operated the turkey processing plant in Greenbush from 1951 to 1961.

İİİEva Burkel died in 1963.George then moved to Springfield, Ore. and worked at a lumber mill. He did carpentry work on the Iron Range of Minnesota then moved to St. Paul where he did commercial carpentry for many years. He retired and later moved to Thief River Falls and lived with his daughter, Arlene for five years. He moved back to Greenbush in 2002 and into the Greenbush Nursing Home in 2003.George loved deer hunting.

İİİGeorge is survived by two sons, Frank (Jan) Burkel of Oakland, Ore. and John (Peggy) Burkel of Springfield, Ore.; three daughters, Arlene Wilcox of Thief River Falls, Sharon Halvorson of Clear Lake and Delores (Al) Kohutek of Saquache, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; two brothers, Matthew (Helen) Burkel of Badger and Tony Burkel of Warroad; two sisters, Elizabeth (Raymond) Schaller of Greenbush and Susan Schires of Greenbush.

İİİGeorge was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Robert; one granddaughter; one grandson; one great-grandson, Douglas Harmer; two brothers, John and Peter Burkel.
