Heartland Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Special music will be provided by St. Joseph's Church Choir, and military honors will be accorded by the Red Lake Falls American Legion Post. Casketbearers will be Mathew Erickson, Casey Erickson, Jamie Erickson, Nathan Hoosier, Randy Sauve and Jim Murphy. Honorary casketbearers will be Chester's friends from Oak Knolls Golf Course. Burial will be in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Madison, S.D. on Friday, October 6, at 1 p.m.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, October 4) from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Johnson Funeral Service in Red Lake Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.
Chester F. Brown was born on November 1, 1923 in Duluth, the son of Charles and Theresa (Costello) Brown. He graduated from high school in Duluth and entered the U.S. Army, serving for four years during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Chet returned to Duluth where he married Betty Spangers in 1948. They lived in Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota where he was a printer. For 25 years, he worked at the Madison Daily Leader in Madison, S.D. Betty died in June of 1980. Chet retired from the newspaper and later moved to Red Lake Falls. On June 9, 1990, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Schmidt, and the couple made their home in Red Lake Falls.
Chet enjoyed golf, politics, crossword puzzles, sports and the company of his dog.
He was a member of the Red Lake Falls American Legion Post, Thief River Falls VFW Post and Oak Knolls Golf Course.
Chet is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Red Lake Falls; a daughter, Beth (Keith) Erickson of Albert Lea; three grandsons; four stepchildren, Peggy (Brian) Hoosier of Red Lake Falls, Dean (Deanne) Schmidt of Crookston, Tim (Nancy) Schmidt of Fargo, N.D. and Dan Schmidt of Oakdale, Calif.; seven step grandchildren; a brother, Charles Brown of West Bend, Wisc.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty; two infant children; one step grandson, Nathan; and a brother, William Brown. A00003B2000OC04
