
Detroit Lakes - Arthur Brown, 86, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Saturday, July 17, 1999 at St. Mary's Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 21) at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend Gary Johnson officiating. Ida Nordvall will be the organist, and soloist will be Diane Johnson. Military honors will be accorded by the Thief River Falls American Legion and VFW posts. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation was held from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20 at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.
Arthur Reser Brown was born on August 30, 1912 in Floyd, IA, the son of Harry and Augusta (Reser) Brown. He was baptized and confirmed into the Methodist faith in Floyd where he grew up and attended school. Arthur worked on the family farm until entering the United States Army in 1941.
On October 26, 1942 he was united in marriage to Alma Hanson in Floyd, IA. The couple moved to Brownwood,TX where Art was stationed in the armed forces. Their first child was born in 1943 while Art was stationed in the European Theater. After his discharge in 1945, the family moved to rural Floyd, IA where they farmed. In 1960, they moved to Thief River Falls where they purchased a rest home. The couple owned and operated 6th Street Grocery from 1964 until they sold the business in 1972.
Arthur drove school bus for the Thief River Falls school system until he retired in 1985. He made his home in Thief River Falls until Alma's death on July 27, 1994 when he moved to Moorhead Manor in Moorhead. In 1997, he moved to St. Mary's Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes where he had since resided.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Thief River Falls, the Thief River Falls VFW and American Legion posts and the Sons of Norway. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.
Arthur is survived by two sons, David (Sharon) of Haiwasse, AR and Norman (Shirley) of Coon Rapids; one daughter, Susan (Butch) Poolman of Pelican Rapids; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one brother, Byron Brown of Osage, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother, Ralph. A00003B1999JL21
