
Gully - Sanna Brovold, 88, died Monday, October 26, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 29 at Lund Lutheran Church in Gully with Reverend Robert Dahlen officiating. Patty Thorssen was the organist, and Les Torgerson was the soloist. Trumpet soloist was Luke Torgerson. Casketbearers were Rob Brekke, Wayne Brekke, Gene Arveson, Lyle Hanson, Todd Fore and David Rindahl. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston was in charge of the arrangements.
Sanna Hanson was born on April 4, 1910 on a farm near Echo, the daughter of Hans and Annie (Homme) Hanson. She was baptized at Rock Valle Lutheran Church near Echo. With her parents and sister, she moved to the homestead north of Gully in October of 1918. Sanna was confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church, rural Trail. She attended country school at Pleasant View in District 9, high school at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston and teacher's training at Bemidji Teacher's College.
On June 16, 1938 she married Arnold Brovold. The couple moved to a farm Arnold purchased near the Brovold family farm. In 1946 they moved to their home in Gully.
Sanna had various jobs in the community, including teaching country school, managing the Gully Co-op Store, working with the OEO in Oklee and later as a representative for the Association for Retarded Citizens. During the last years of her life she wrote the "Gully News" for area newspapers and enjoyed the contact with the community.
She worked hard as a citizen of Gully, serving several years as City Clerk and assisting with efforts to convert the school into a mall. At Lund Lutheran Church Sanna held several offices, including president of the congregation. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Gully.
She was especially honored when selected "Outstanding Alumnus" of Northwest School of Agriculture in 1996.
Sanna is survived by her husband, Arnold; one daughter, Carol (Les) Torgerson of Thief River Falls; one son, Gay (Doreen) Brovold of Gully; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude (Orville) Christianson of Thief River Falls and Luella (Clifford) Arveson of Trail; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Harry and Walter.
