
Mentor - Hazel Boyum, 91, of Mentor passed away on Saturday, July 19, 1997 at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.
Funeral servies were held on Tuesday, July 22 at Bethel Bible Church in Mentor with Reverend W.E. Danielson officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, rural Mentor. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine was in charge of the arrangements.
Hazel Loretta Sykes was born on February 11, 1906 in Northome, the daughter of Herbert and Lois (Canfield) Sykes. At an early age, she moved with her parents to Mentor where she grew up and attended school. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.
She was united in marriage to Leonard Boyum on November 12, 1926 in Mentor. The lived on a farm near Maple Lake, and Hazel worked as a cook at the Mentor Public School. Hazel and Leonard moved to Thief River Falls and lived there for nine years where she was his janitorial assistant. They retired in 1966 and returned to their farm near Maple Lake. They moved back to Thief River Falls where Leonard died in l983. Hazel moved to Maplewood Apartments in Mentor in September of 1983. She entered Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile in April of this year.
Hazel was a member of Bethel Bible Church and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved birds and liked to watch baseball.
Survivors include her daughter, Doris (Eugene) Nesland of Ada; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Ruby (Ervin) Trontvedt of Fertile; brother, Melvin Sykes of Salem, OR; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters; Mildred and Mabel; and brothers, Milton, Earl and Roy.
