
Thief River Falls - John Borgen, 77, died Thursday, February 12, 1998 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 14 at Green Funeral Home with Reverend John Wollenzein officiating. Grace Hammer provided the special music. Honorary casketbearers were Bradley Wiener, Stacy Finch, Christopher Borgen, Daniel Wiener, Adam Borgen and Randy Steenerson. Burial was held at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
John Marvin Borgen was born on June 8, 1920 in Whitman, ND, the son of Fred and Ruth (Gargrave) Borgen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He attended school in Thief River Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, entering the service on November 14, 1942 at Fort Snelling. He achieved the rank of Private First Class and was honorably discharged on July 12, 1943 at Fort Dix, NJ.
On January 2, 1944 John was united in marriage to Elvina June Roese in Thief River Falls. They moved to Fosston where he managed George Peters Grocery Store. In 1946 they moved to Crookston where he managed George Peters Grocery Store. In late 1946 they moved to Thief River Falls where he was employed by Thief River Jobbing. He worked there for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Elvina died March 20, 1981.
He enjoyed spending time at his Pine Lake cabin.
John is survived by two sons, Gary (Barbara) Borgen of Bemidji and Rick (Shari) Borgen of Willmar; one daughter, Mary (Joel) Wiener of West Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
