Russell Bergh, 81

Gully - Russell Bergh, 81, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 21 at 11 a.m. at Lund Lutheran Church in Gully with Reverend Robert Dahlen officiating. Cindy Bjerklie was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Adrienne Hanson. Casketbearers were LeRoy Lee, Dwight Lee, Wayne Brekke, Robert Brekke, Douglas Robbins, Richard Robbins and Donald Berry. Honorary casketbearers were Frank Bergh, Joe Brekke, Lloyd Brovold, Glen Oistad, Benny Johnson, Leslie Turk and Orville Haugen. Burial was in the Lund Lutheran Cemetery near Gully. The Petterson Funeral Home of Oklee was in charge of the arrangements.

Russell Malvig Bergh was born on February 4, 1917 at Hallock, the son of Henry and Esther (Malvig) Bergh. At a young age he moved with his parents to a farm near Gully where he would live most of his life. He was baptized and confirmed at Lund Lutheran Church in Gully and attended school at Sunnyside School, Gully School and Gonvick High School. He was a member of the Gully baseball team.

Russell served in the U.S. Army from June of 1941 until receiving an honorable discharge in November of 1945, serving in the Pacific area in the Philippines including New Guinea and Luzon. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Clearbrook. An avid gardener, Russell raised fruit, vegetables and flowers which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.

Russell is survived by three sisters, Hazel Lee of Ocala, FL, Iona Berry of Oklee and Blanche Robbins of Minneapolis; one sister-in-law, June Bergh of Gully; 13 nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Grace Brekke; and one brother, Sanford Bergh.
