
Malta, MT - Viola A. Bergan, 89, died Thursday, February 13, 1997 at the Phillips County Good Samaritan Center in Malta of natural causes.
Vi was born on August 24, 1907 in Jamestown, ND, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Thoms) Stuff. She was united in marriage to Adolph Engeman Bergan on November 24, 1925 in Saco and they lived on the Bergan homestead, four miles north of Saco. In 1959 they moved to Malta and Vi worked at the courthouse. She became the County Librarian in 1962 and worked until retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the Malta's Woman's Club, Charter member of the Malta Senior Citizens, Professional Business Womans Club, Lutheran Church, Malta Chapter of the Montana Senior Citizens Association. She served on the District I advisory board for Action for Eastern Montana and did volunteer work at the Malta Food Bank. She was State President of the Gold Diggers Contest Club, a literary organization. From 1972 until 1987 she traveled to 15 foreign countries and 43 states in the US. Her hobbies were traveling, reading, oil painting, literary contest, Scrabble, music and dancing.
She is survived by daughter Diane Lockard of Salt Lake City; sons Marvin Bergan of Abilene, TX, Robert Bergan of Thief River Falls, Jerry Bergan of Oak Harbor, WA; sisters Lorraine Cattanack of Grants Pass, OR, Eleanor Shipp of Glasgow, Leone Keeline of Roseburg, OR; and many grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1969; daughter Linda in 1948; son Louis in 1996; granddaughter Sandra Bergan Martin in 1984; and brothers Wilbur Irvin and Louis Stuff.
