- Earl Berg, 76, died Friday, January 19, 2001 at his home near
Red Lake Falls.
Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls with Rev. Jeffrey S. Lytle officiating. Casey Klipping was the organist, and Delores Kading was the soloist. Military honors were accorded by the Red Lake Falls American Legion. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Red Lake Falls in the spring.
Earl Tyler Berg was born on April 19, 1924 in Roome township of Polk county, the son of Thorvald and Karen (Bjornrud) Berg. He was baptized and confirmed at Sand Hill Lutheran Church, rural Eldred. He was raised near Eldred and graduated from Climax High School in 1942. He entered the US Marines on July 15, 1942 and served overseas. He was honorably discharged on October 27, 1945. On November 12, 1951, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War until his discharge on July 8, 1952.
Earl was married married to Sylvia Rawerts of rural Red Lake Falls for 46 years. The couple lived in St. Paul where he worked construction. In 1985, they returned to the Rawerts home farm where they had since resided.
Earl was a life member of Crookston VFW Post 1902, AFRAN of Red Lake Falls and St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls. He was a former member of St. Stephanus Church in St. Paul, serving as an elder for 15 years. He also served on the Concordia Academy School Board in Roseville for many years.
He enjoyed repairing sewing machines and traveling.
Earl is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Red Lake Falls; a son, Earl (Joan) Berg Jr. of White Bear Lake; a daughter, Karen (Ed) Ohlrogge-Carlson of St. Paul; five grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Berg of St. Paul Park; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Berg in 1991; his parents; eight sisters, Laura Boness, Anna Winger, Hazel Winger, Mamie Johnson, Gina Berg, Belva Overgaard, Marion Berg and Myrtle Berg; and five brothers, Haibert Berg, Telbert Berg, Alton Berg, Lawrence and Merlin Berg.
