Martin Benson, 97

Erskine - Martin Benson, 97, of Erskine died Sunday, September 20 at his home in Erskine.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 25 at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with Reverend Kwen Sanderson officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine. The Carlin Hoialmen Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Martin Bernt Benson was born on March 21, 1901 in Knute township, rural Erskine, the son of Bernt and Gunhild Benson. He grew up and attended country school in Knute township, graduating with the class of 1919.

On July 28, 1922 Martin was united in marriage to Marie Gudmundson in Red Lake Falls. After their marriage, the couple farmed and raised their family on the home farm. Marie died on January 18, 1975. Martin remained on the farm that his parents had settled all of his life.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Erskine and enjoyed bowling and golf.

Martin is survived by two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman (Sally) Benson of Fairbanks, AK; three sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one daughter, Margie Ione Benson in November of 1977; seven brothers, Carl, Albert, Gust, Benny, Willie, Arthur and Reuben; and two sisters, Ruth and Bertha.
