
Red Lake Falls - John Bendel, 84, died Wednesday, January 7, 1998 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Father Gary LaMoine officiating. Kathie Knott was the organist, and special music was provided by St. Joseph's Church choir. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery in the spring. The Petterson Funeral Home of Red Lake Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
John Jacob Bendel was born January 15, 1913 in Greenbush, the son of John and Mary (Brown) Bendel. The family moved to Red Lake Falls in 1914. John worked at many jobs and later joined his brother Leo in the plumbing business. On January 21, 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and entered into active service on February 14, 1942. He served in the Aleution Islands, Alaska and Germany. Following his discharge on October 9, 1945 John resumed his plumbing career.
On December 27, 1952 he was united in marriage to Ione Helm at Crookston. The couple moved to West Allis, WI where John worked as a plumber until his retirement in 1978. Following his wife's death on April 23, 1991 he returned to Red Lake Falls where he has since resided.
John is survived by one son, Robert (Val) of Loves Park, IL; one sister, Florence (Wallace) Miller of Red Lake Falls; one brother, Leo (Josephine) Bendel of Red Lake Falls; and two sister-in-laws, Lois Helm and Vivian (Lee) Soland.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; four brothers, Clarence, Joseph, Carl and Balsey; and four sisters, Frances Constant, Mary Fitzgerald, Sabina Remick and Clara Bendel.
