Roseville, CA - Joren Baird, 100, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at Sunrise Health Care Center in Roseville, CA.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend Tim Bauer officiating. Ruth Stenson was the organist, and Jane Anderson was the soloist. Honorary casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Jolene K. Wolff, Kelly G. Koper, Orlie G. Baird II, Karen G. McKinley, Rhonda R. Hartney, Ramona R. Moyer, Richard C. Baird, Roxann M. Baird, Victoria L. Bills, Arthur C. Baird III, and Dawn M. Baird. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, rural Oklee.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 18 at the Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls and at the church for one hour prior to services on Saturday.
Joren Hegland was born on February 5, 1899 in Satesdalen, Norway, the daughter of Olav and Torbjor (Austad) Hegland. When Joren was three years old she immigrated to the United States with her parents and family. They settled in Fosston, and nine years later the family moved to a 160-acre farm in Pennington county. For nearly eight years, Joren taught in some of the local one-room rural schools.
On June 20, 1920 she was united in marriage to Arthur J. Baird. After the birth of her first child, Joren gave up her teaching career to raise her family. The family later lived in Petoskey, MI for about 15 years, in Ypsilanti, MI for 10 years and in Bemidji for 19 years. In 1971 they moved to Thief River Falls.
Joren's husband died in 1982, and she continued to make her home in Thief River Falls until she was 92 years old and a second fall in her home led her children to "convince her" to live with them in California.
Joren is survived by two sons, Arthur (Joanne) Baird of Roseville, CA and Orlie (Gay) Baird of San Diego, CA; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred in 1986; one son, Chester in 1992; and her parents.
