Thief River Falls - Walter Bratland, 85, of Thief River Falls, formerly of Strathcona, died on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 in LifeCare Greenbush Manor at Greenbush.
    A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 13 at Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush, with Pastor Curtis Matz officiating. Interment was held at Greenwood Cemetery of Strathcona
    Walter R. Bratland, the son of Oscar and Mabel Bratland, was born Nov. 8, 1926 in Strathcona. He grew up and attended school there.   He married Marion Larson on Sept. 11, 1954 in Fosston. He worked at a grain elevator until he was disabled. They then returned to the home farm at Strathcona where they lived for many years and he did ‘hobby farming,’ raising a few cows and a few sheep. In 1986, they moved to Thief River Falls and have lived there since, except for the past year he has lived at LifeCare Greenbush Manor.
    Walter’s hobbies included reading books and magazines, dancing the polka, and he especially enjoyed hunting.
    He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marion; daughter Marlene (Clay) VanHorn of Donnelly; son Marvin (Julie) Bratland of Strathcona; four grandchildren, Melanie Smith (David) Klein of Thief River   Falls, Matthew Smith of Thief River Falls, Melodie Smith (Travis) Traille of Wahpeton, N.D., and  Adam Bratland of Strathcona; and former son-in-law Melvin Smith of Wheaton; sisters, Myrtle Sterner of Thief River Falls, Pearl Lybeck of Grand Forks, N.D., and Ruby Erickson of Thief River Falls.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ben, Obert, Junior, Raymond, James  and his twin brother, Warren.
    Arrangements were with Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush.
