Thief River Falls - Olga Gilbertson, 92, formerly of Holt, died on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at Oakland Park Communities in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, with Rev. Sheila Michaels officiating. Casket bearers will be Olga’s grandchildren. Interment will follow in the Holt Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be for one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Olga Theoline Nelson was born July 11, 1919, on the farm in Mud Lake to Knute and Karen (Ellingson) Nelson. She was baptized at 7 days old because they didn’t expect her to live. She grew up in Mud Lake and attended country school. She was confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt. She stayed with her Uncle Ole and Aunt Martha Ellingson to attend high school and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls.
After graduating from high school, Olga worked at the Sanitarium in Thief River Falls. She married Lyle Gilbertson on July 17, 1943. Lyle entered the service, and during World War II, Olga and her sister Gladys lived in California and Texas and worked at the defense plants. She returned to Thief River Falls. Following the war, they moved to back to Holt.
Olga worked all the time. She worked cleaning houses, in the potato fields, and at the Land O’Lakes Turkey Plant in Thief River Falls for many years. In 1963, she started work at the Carlson Bakery in Thief River Falls and retired from Gary’s Bakery in the late 1990s. She was the friendly face behind the counter at the bakery.
Olga loved quilting, embroidering, and crocheting. She liked to grow flowers and flower gardens around her home. She was always outside in the summer tending to her yard. Every Tuesday, Olga would bake bread, buns and homemade soup. She belonged to Nazareth Lutheran Church and was active with the Circle and the quilters. Olga was a gentle, soft-spoken woman. She also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds.
She is survived by five children: Lyle Allen “Tobin” Gilbertson, Thief River Falls, Karen (Wallace) Knutson, Kennedy, DelRay (special friend Nancy) Gilbertson, Thief River Falls, Cheryl (Barry) Nelson, Newfolden, and Denny Gilbertson, Thief River Falls; six grandchildren: Dawn Gilbertson, Thief River Falls, Kelly Burger, Hallock, Randy Knutson, Kennedy, Shane Gilbertson, Park Rapids, Chad (Erica) Nelson, Viking, and Tara (Jeremy) Nelson, Thief River Falls; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister Clara Reierson, Holt; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Olga was preceded in death by her husband Lyle on May 16, 1999; parents; three sisters: Gladys Anderson, Emma Moberg and Anna Nelson; brother Johnie Nelson; and infant brother Edwin Nelson.
