Thief River Falls - Irene Osell, 84, died on April 15, 2005 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 21 at the Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau. Interment was held at the Spruce Cemetery.
Irene Osell, the daughter of Astrie ( Engman ) and Morris Brateng, was born on April 11, 1921 in Roseau. She grew up and attended the Casper School in Skime. On June 16, 1970 she received her diploma from Roseau High School.
On May 11, 1939 she and Walter Osell were united in marriage in Roseau. They farmed dairy cattle. In 1965 Irene worked as a telephone operator, and also baked and did maid work at the Guest House Restaurant. She also helped out at the Corner Café with the baking.
She lived in the Wannaska area all her life until 2002 when she moved to Thief River Falls. She enjoyed flower gardening, baking (lefsa) and cooking, crocheting, making rugs, reading, watching TV shows, and playing games (Uno). She loved her grandchildren and her great-granddaughter who was named after her great-great-great-grandmother. She liked company and visiting with friends.
She is survived by her two children, Deborah (Donald) Mattson of Thief River Falls and Duane (Diane) Osell of Wannaska, and her foster daughter Patty (Jerry) Vanette of Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Marian Haugen of Wannaska; brother, Dean (Pat) Brateng of Wannaska; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; sisters, Clarice Johnson and Lila Alten; brothers, Ernest and Earl Brateng; two-granddaughters; and one nephew. A00003B2005AR27
