 Washington, D.C. - Gordon M. Odegaard, 81, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 at his home in Washington, D.C., where he resided after retiring from the U.S. Deptartment of Defense. Gordon was born March 6, 1930 in Thief River Falls, to Morris and Gladys (Vigness) Odegaard. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. The next year, he attended Augsburg College and attended two years at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 1951, Gordon enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent three years assigned to the Army Security Agency. Most of these years were spent at Arlington, Va., Hall station. He was an instructor, technical and manual writer. After he ws discharged from the Army in 1954, Gordon returned to the University of Minnesota and, in 1955, Gordon graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with distinction. The next 10 years, Gordon worked as an insurance agent, as a salaried employee and proprieter of his own business. In 1965, he became employed with the Federal Department of Defense and retired from that servince in 1995, as a senior operation staff officer. Gordon also worked as a tour guide at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. He was an avid reader and did a lot off traveling to many countries. He enjoyed all music and played piano for his own enjoyment. He is survived by a brother, Dick (Pat) of Fargo, N.D.; sisters, Marilyn “Tiny” Jorstad of Thief River Falls, and Gloria (Dick) Schlecther of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a sister, Mary Ann “Dolly” Odegaard. A00003B2012FB01  |
