Lloyd Mercil, 84 Print E-mail

    McAllen, Texas - Lloyd M. Mercil, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 at the LifeCare Hospitals of South Texas in McAllen, Texas.
    A memorial service will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks, on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.
    Lloyd Medore Mercil was born on Oct. 12, 1927 in Brooks, to Louis and Louise (Champagne) Mercil. He was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith and attended country school in rural Brooks and High School in Plummer.
    Lloyd served in the US Army during World War II and the Korean War.  He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War. In 1948, he married Lorraine (Hoium) Mercil and had six children Lorna, Lynae, Lynette, Loring and Lori.
    Lloyd worked for 35 years as a rural letter carrier, receiving the million mile award for one million miles of safe driving on the mail route. He was also a long time member of the St. Joseph Catholic church in Brooks, a member of the Minnesota Rural Letter Carriers Association, the American Legion and served 12 years on the Oklee Public School Board as President. He enjoyed entertaining friends and family.  He especially loved flowers, gardening and speaking French to all the French Canadians that live in Alamo, Texas during the winter.  He spent 16 winters in Alamo, Texas, where he had many good friends. He also enjoyed water-volleyball, biking to breakfast every Friday morning, playing cards and potluck suppers with his winter Texan friends.  
    He is survived by special friend Janice Peterson; daughters Lynae (Sidney) Finseth of Trail, Lynette (Gary) Grove of Dilworth; son, Loring (Tracy Ellison) of Portland, Ore., and Lori of Brooks; grandchildren: Travis Finseth, Jarrod Finseth, Danielle Paradis, Charity DePinto, Adam Grove, Aric Grove, Brendan Ellison and Tristan Mothershead; great-grandchildren: Mikalya Paradis, Seth Paradis, Jordan Finseth, Brianna Finseth, Brittney Finseth, Katherine Finseth,  Joshua Finseth, Parker Grove, Bailey Grove, Clayton Grove, Colton Grove, Avariella Ellison, Genavecia Ellison and Arianna Ellison.
    He is also survived by his brother Everill Mercil of Brooks; and sisters, Donna Mae Bergeron of Thief River Falls; Dellas Paradis of Brooks; Madeline (Parnell) Thibert of Dixon, Ill., and many other nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death of his parents Louis & Louise; infant daughter and Lorna (Michael) Wicks; brother, Donald Mercil; brother-in-laws, Ronald Paradis and Willard Bergeron.
    He will be greatly missed and may his memory be blessed.
