Hermantown - R. Lon Flaten, 58, of Hermantown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Salem Lutheran Church in Hermantown. Honorary casket bearers included Brian “Espo” Espeseth, Kurt “Uncle Marbie” Marben, Rick LaVoy, Steve “Chaz” Paulson, Gary “Joey” Trangsrud, Steve “Dakota” Odegaard, Mike “Lucky Dog” Sorteberg and Dale “Dr. Johnson” Johnson.
Reuben Lon Flaten was born on Sept. 21, 1953 in Greenbush, to Reuben and Christine (Gjovik) Flaten. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church of Greenbush. He attended and graduated from Greenbush Public Schools. He was a graduate of St. Paul Ramsey School of Ophthalmological Medical Technology. He worked as a C.O.M.T. for 38 years. He loved and was proud of his profession.
On Oct. 9, 1982, Lon married Marie Dibble at Tracy Lutheran Church in Tracy. To this union, two daughters were born, Kate and Abby of Hermantown. Lon, Marie and their girls made their home in Thief River Falls from 1982-91, Bemidji from 1991-2002 and Hermantown from 2002-present.
Lon was a strong Christian who had a deep faith in God, which he was not afraid to share. The family are members of Salem Lutheran Church.
Lon was an active sports fan of all sporting events, especially the Hermantown Hawks, and he always attended the State Hockey Tournament. His contagious laughter and humor will be greatly missed.
Lon is survived by his wife Marie, and children, Kate and Abby, all of Hermantown; sister Rhonda (Rick) Hamre of Fargo, N.D.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane (Robert) Hanson of Hudson, Wis., Karen (Colin) Nyren of South Haven, Gereld (Jen) of Smartsville, Calif., Charles of Westbrook, Roger Dibble of Sante, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and a great many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
