Edina - Kenneth Laverne Aune, 86 of Grygla, died on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 at Heritage Hospice in Edina.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 30 at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, with Rev. Cheryl Berg officiating. Casket bearers included Laverne’s grandchildren: Christopher Wells, Shane Wells, Patrick Wells, Lindsey Wells, Derek Berg, Megan Berg, Mark Severts, Tara Severts, Cody Severts, Brandon Bieber and Brittany Bieber. Interment was held at Moose River Cemetery near Gatzke. Military honors were provided by the Grygla American Legion and the Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Kenneth Laverne Aune was born on Dec. 31, 1924 in International Falls, the son of Norwegian parents, John and Gusta (Lian) Aune. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. The family made their home on a farm in Rollis Township, south of Gatzke. He attended country school through the eighth grade, at which time he had to stay home and help on the farm. He was known to his family and friends as Laverne.
Laverne was united in marriage to Lila Marcella Kilen on Aug. 18, 1945 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Thief Lake. To this union, four lovely, adorable daughters were born, KayLynn, Roxanne, Karen, and Denise. Laverne entered into service with the United States Army on Feb. 27, 1946 at Ft. Snelling. He worked as a teletype mechanic and served in San Antonio, Texas, St. Louis, Mo., as well as other places. Laverne was honorably discharged on Aug. 23, 1947 in Scott Field, Ill.
The couple made their home in Grygla, and Laverne was co-owner of an Appliance Store with Clayton Ostby, when the REA brought electricity to area farms. In 1950, the family made their home in the Minneapolis area where they made their home for the next 41 years. Laverne worked several jobs including Johnson Wells Screen, hauling dirt for people putting in lawns, and for 35 years drove truck for Land O’Lakes. After retiring, the couple returned to Grygla in 1991.
Laverne was a member of United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, American Legion Post in Grygla, and also held membership at the Fourtown/Grygla Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, visiting with friends and relatives, going to sporting events, traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, and spending winters in Mission, Texas since 1989. He enjoyed life, was fun loving; Laverne worked hard and played hard.
Laverne is survived by his children, KayLynn (Les) Wells of Kelowna, B.C., Canada, Roxanne (Tim) Berg of Cropwell, Ala., Karen (Darell) Severts of Grygla, and Denise (David) Bieber of Lakeville; grandchildren, Christopher (Shana) Wells, Shane Wells, Patrick (Amanda) Wells, Lindsey Wells, Derek (Molly) Berg, Megan Berg, Mark (Tausha) Severts, Tara Severts, Cody (fiancé, Shelly Wernet) Severts, Brandon Bieber and Brittany Bieber; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Alena Wells, Owen and Evelyn Berg, Addison and Brianna Severts; sister, Marvel Carlson of Thief River Falls; sisters-in-law, Hazel Aune of Thief River Falls and Helen Kilen of Greenbush; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Laverne is preceded in death by his wife, Lila, on March 27, 2003; his parents; brothers and sisters, Olaf Aune, Esther O’Brien, Mildred Paulson, Glen Aune and Juel Aune.
