Paynesville - Jeanette (Jean) Payne 78, of Paynesville died on Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at her home in Paynesville.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Dec. 29 at Paynesville Lutheran Church, in Paynesville. Interment was held at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
Jeanette Carol Payne was born on Feb. 16, 1933, in Grygla, the daughter of Hans and Hulda (Norby) Hanson. She attended a small country school for her primary education and graduated from Goodridge High School in 1950. She moved to Thief River Falls, where she worked at Land O’ Lakes Creamery and then to Fargo, N.D. in 1956, where she was a secretary in the Agronomy Department at NDAC (now known as NDSU).
On Oct. 20, 1956, Jean was united in marriage to Wallace D. Payne at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. This union was blessed with three daughters and a son. The family lived in Modesto, Calif., from 1958-60, Goodridge, from 1960-71, Little Falls, from 1971-80, and in Paynesville from 1980 until the present. Jean worked as a bookkeeper for businesses in Paynesville and then as a customer service representative at Community First Bank until her retirement in 1994.
Jean was a member of Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. She was active there in the WELCA. Jean also was a Sunday school teacher at her church in Goodridge and Little Falls. Jean was a former secretary of the Paynesville Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed gardening, bicycling, and antiquing. Her family will remember her as being an outstanding homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother.
Jean is survived by her husband of 55 years, Wallace; children, Wade Payne of St. Paul, Marsha (Mark) Damon of Phoenix, Ariz., Kathryn Payne of Paynesville, and Wendy (Perry) Darling of Tempe, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and both siblings.
