     Mesa, Ariz. - Gerald Albert Grabowska 64, died on Monday Sept. 5, 2011 at his home in Mesa, Ariz.
    Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lancaster.
    Gerald Albert Grabowska was born on April 16, 1947 in Anoka. He was the son of Albert and the late Bernice (Race) Grabowska. He grew up and attended country school and then graduated from Goodridge High School in 1965.
    In 1966, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany. He was united in marriage to Helene Babl, daughter of Heinrich and the late Elisabeth Babl in Kreuzwertheim, Germany.
    He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1973. After graduating from the Thief River Falls Area Vocational Technical Institute, he owned a construction company, drove school bus and farmed part-time on his farm in rural Goodridge.
    The couple then moved on and owned grocery stores in Goodridge and Lancaster, and then in Pembina, N.D., until they moved to Mesa, AZ in 2006.
    Survivors include his wife Helen of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter Patricia (Scott) Sunderland and grandchildren Austin and Rachel of Mesa, Ariz.; son Brian Grabowska of Oakdale, and son Kevin (Kimberly Penning) Grabowska; and grandchildren, Tyler and Katelyn Grabowska of Moorhead.
    Survivors include his father, Albert Grabowska of Goodridge; and brothers, Larry (Pat) Grabowska, Donny (Julie) Grabowska, Mark (Jeanine) Grabowska and sister Shirley (Steve) Holte; and many nephews and nieces, relatives and friends in the U.S. and in Germany.
    Gerald was a member of Lancaster Covenant Church, enjoyed coaching both at Goodridge and Lancaster,  loved to golf, play cards with friends and family, visiting his family and friends, but above all he loved being around his children and grandchildren.
