Lauchlin “Sonny” Cameron was born on June 14, 1920 on a farm near Hamilton, N.D., the son of Gillespie and Charlotte (Berry) Cameron. Sonny grew up in a family of nine children. Times were tough growing up, and this is where Sonny learned the value of hard work. On March 2, 1940 Sonny was united in marriage to Evangeline Vikjord. Together, they raised their family of three children and lived in Glasston, N.D., and Nielsville, before moving to Thief River Falls in 1957. Sonny’s biggest enjoyment in life besides his family was farming. He spent his entire life working on the farm, and looked forward to his favorite time of year, the harvest. Sonny often spoke of how he was able to watch over the years as farming went from using horses to work the fields, to using all the different modern technological advancements available. He was happy to see these advancements as it meant a more efficient way of farming. Throughout the years Sonny and Evangeline enjoyed collecting clocks together. He was very proud of his toy tractor collection, and loved riding the ATV checking on the crops. Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his pride and joy, granddaughter, Kris and great-grandson, Alec. He will be remembered as a fun-loving man who liked to shoot the bull with his neighbors and friends and it was not uncommon to be offered a “wee” nip when visiting him. A good poker game with his family or friends was one of his favorite pastimes. Survivors include his loving children, Sandy (Paul) Erickson of Grand Forks, N.D., Kathy (Bill) Shadduck, Annandale, and David (Bucky) Cameron of Thief River Falls; granddaughter, Kris (Brent) Vik of Grand Forks, N.D.; great-grandson, Alec Erickson; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
