Karlstad - Charles R. Englund, 72, of Karlstad, died on Monday, March 21, 2005 at the Karlstad Healthcare Center in Karlstad.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 24, at the First Lutheran Church in Karlstad. Military honors were accorded by the Karlstad American Legion. Interment was held at Karlstad Cemetery.
Charles Ray Englund, the son of the late Nimrod and Nora (Hams) Englund, was born on July 20, 1932, in Arveson Township of Kittson County, near Karlstad. He grew up on the family farm, graduating from Karlstad High School as salutatorian in 1951. In March of 1952, he entered the U.S. Navy, making it his career, retiring in 1974.
During his service, he served in Japan, Korea, and two terms in Viet Nam. He served the last several years of his career as a recruiting officer in Indianapolis, Ind. After retiring from the Navy, he moved back to Karlstad where he had since made his home.
Charlie was very active in community organizations, serving as treasurer of the Karlstad Lions for 18 years, was a member of the Karlstad Golf Club, Karlstad American Legion Post 445, the Kennedy V.F.W. Post, and of the Karlstad Eagles. For the past month, he has resided at the Karlstad Healthcare Center where he passed away on Monday morning, March 21, 2005, after losing his battle with cancer, at the age of 72 years, 8 months, and 1 day.
He is survived by four brothers, Larry (Evelyn) of Anchorage, Alaska; Richard (Kathy), of Lake Bronson, and Louis (Lorraine) and Jim (Connie), both of Karlstad; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives ; and special friends and neighbors, Ron, Elwyn, Benjamin, and Gretchen Ruud.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Charlotte; and brothers, Gene, Rodney, Gary, and Jackie.
