Nevis - Merle L. Kruschke, 69, of Nevis, died on Saturday, February 26, 2005 at home, with his children at his bedside, from complications of prostate cancer.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday, March 1 at the Cease Family Funeral Chapel in Nevis, with Pastor Gary Walpole officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
Merle was born April 29, 1935 in Fairmont, N.D., to Archie and Myrtle (Osborne) Schutt. Merle made his family home in Minneapolis upon graduation from the University of Minnesota, where he worked for the Minnesota Highway Department. He served in the U.S. Army.
Merle was involved in Minneapolis politics, running for eighth ward alderman. In 1966, the family moved to Thief River Falls, were he was a professor at Northland Community College, until his retirement in 1982. He retired to Nevis, making his home on Lake Belle Taine. He ran Dorset Village Antiques until his death. Merle continued to be involved in the state DFL party, supporting many local candidates.
Survivors include three children, Karla (Mike) Litch of Minneapolis, John Kruschke of Nevis and Keith (Paula) Kruschke of Little Falls; six grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Schutt and Myrtle Kruschke; stepfather, Orville Kruschke, sister, Gayle, son, Brian and brother, John Wesley.
