Thief River Falls - Ernest Gilbertson, 85, died on Wednesday, January 26, at Northwest Medical Center, CNC Unit, Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 29, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with Reverend Jason Asselstine officiating. Casket bearers included Everial Gilbertson, David Schmidt, Russell Gilbertson, Jr., Milo Gilbertson, Gene Anderson and Lyle Gilbertson. Interment was held at Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.
Ernest James Gilbertson was born May 19, 1919 in Flandreau, S.D., the son of Hjalmer and Bertha (Ellingson) Gilbertson. He attended school in Flandreau.
On December 22, 1941, Ernest was united in marriage to Ruth Knutson in Brookings, S.D.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. Upon completion of service, the couple moved to Crookston, in 1948 where he worked for Ottertail Power Company until 1975. He then transferred to Ottertail’s Big Stone Plant and worked there until his retirement in 1982 with 32 years of service. They moved to Thief River Falls in 1982.
Ernie enjoyed fishing, hunting, auto races and hobby farming. He especially loved spending time with his grandkids. He will be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Thief River Falls; daughters, Gloria Gilbertson of Grand Forks, N.D., and Shirley (Danny) Farden of Redwood City, Calif.; sons, Russell (Ramona) of Shevlin and Dennis (Linda) of Warroad; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Milton (Dorothy) Gilbertson and Howard Gilbertson, all Crookston.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie; a granddaughter; his parents; a sister and three brothers. A00003B2005FB02
