Greenbush - Lillian Burkel, 83, of Greenbush, died on Monday, January 24, 2005 at the Roseau Area Hospital in Roseau.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 27 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush, with Pastor Jeyapaul, officiating. Music was provided by Jeanne Novacek and Darcy Hasson. Casket Bearers were her eight grandsons, Aaron, Terrance, Jason, Brian and Kirby Burkel, Eric “Ole” Arneson, Spencer and Tim Cole. Interment was held at Blessed Sacrament Cemetery.
Lillian Margaret Halberg, the daughter of Joseph & Adriana (Haumont) Halberg was born March 31, 1921 in Bone Lake, Wis. They lived at Wabanica, before moving to Cass Lake, where she grew up and attended school.
She married Peter P. Burkel Jr. on January 1, 1939 in Cass Lake. They lived in Cass Lake until 1944, when the moved to Greenbush and bought a farm in Dewey Township. In 1948, they moved to Hereim Township and started Burkel Grain Service, Inc. Peter Burkel died on Nov. 21, 1982.
Lillian was involved with her family and her family’s business. She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church and especially its Christian Education Programs. She loved to travel and to fish and enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald (Clarice) and Jerome (Deanne); three daughters, Karen Cole (Paul English), Nancy (James) Goslein, all of Greenbush and Brenda (Milt) Arneson of Portland, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marlys Gritman of Seattle, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Melvin Halberg; and one son-in-law, Orvn Cole. A00003B2005FB02
