Brooks - Ernest Cardinal, 86, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, September 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks, with Monsignor Roger Grundhaus presiding. Casket bearers included Dale Mossestad, Brad Mossestad, Aaron Rosten, Andrew Cardinal, Bernie Steinkopf and Leroy Carriere. Interment was held at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Brooks.
Ernest Joseph Cardinal was born April 25, 1918 in Red Lake Falls, to Arthur and Alice (Marleau) Cardinal. He was the fourth of fourteen children.
On April 15, 1941, Ernest was united in marriage to Anna Marie Williams. After their marriage he farmed and also worked out at various jobs. He worked at the Red Lake Falls tow mill, Red Lake Falls rendering plant and also went to Washington to build cement grain silos. He also worked in Milwaukee for a Foundry Company, a taconite plant on the Iron Range, drove milk truck for Red Lake Falls Creamery. He worked for a sod company, drove gravel truck, worked for a Texas businessman making fences and taking care of his Brahma cattle, worked for Brooks Auto and Brooks Elevator.
In 1972, the couple moved into Brooks and he helped farm with his son, hauling grain and working in the fields. He enjoyed drives in the country to see how the crops were growing and enjoyed the fall colors.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Anna of Brooks; five children, Marie (John) Chopyk and Carol A. Cardinal, all of Edina, Donna (Orvis) Mossestad of Plummer, Sharon (Bryon) Rosten of Plummer and Robert (Anita) Cardinal of Thief River Falls; seven grandchildren; a great grandchild; two brothers, Norman Cardinal of Crookston and Elmer Cardinal of Red Lake Falls; five sisters, Alice Delage of Grand Forks, N.D., Lou Theroux of Vancouver, Wash., Eleanor Derouin of Red Lake Falls, Noella Melby of Crookston and Ethel Herrenbreck of Albany, Calif; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and 2 sisters.
