Newport, Ore. - Gertrude Catherine (Walsberg) Mason, 81, of Newport Ore., died on November 22, after a brief battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held on November 28, 2004 in Newport, Ore.
Gertrude Walsberg was born on October 17, 1923 in Grand Forks, N.D., to Victor and Yvonne (Gregoire) Walsberg. She attended grade school in Grand Forks, N.D. In 1935, the family moved to a farm west of St. Hilaire and she attended St. Hilaire School. In 1940, the family moved to a farm in Rocksbury Township. She attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1941.
After graduation, Gertrude, along with an area family, moved to Los Angeles, Calif., area to seek employment. She obtained a job at an airplane factory during World War II and it was there that she met her husband Albert Mason. They were married in 1944. After that she was employed in sales with Sears Roebuck in Los Angeles, Calif.
She and her husband relocated to Newport, Ore., where they owned and operated a motel until his death in 1969. Gertrude then became employed with JCPenney in sales, where she worked for 37 years, retiring when the Newport store was closed. She was honored by JCPenney with a 35-year award for outstanding service to the company.
As a young woman, she was an avid figure skater and later an avid gardener especially flower gardening. She enjoyed visiting various nurseries. She won awards at the Lincoln County Fair for her flowers. She enjoyed working with people and after retiring she volunteered at the local grade school, helping children in the reading program. She was an active member of the Elks Lodge and was an Elkette.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Wende (Ken) Mourer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandchildren; brothers, Russell Walsberg of Sacramento, Calif., Duane (Bev) Walsberg of Borup, Victor Rene (Jo) Walsberg Jr., of Wichita, Kan., Ralph Walsberg of Two Harbors, Dennis (Susan) Walsberg of Federal Way, Wash.; her sisters, Colleen (Willy) Lazarz of Fairbault, Yvonne (Lloyd) Johnson of Victoria, Carol (Harold) Jerde of DeKalb, Ill., Judy Badgley of Des Moines, Wash., Jeanette Walseth of Thief River Falls, Virginia (Ronald) Anderson of Thief River Falls, Joann (Larry) Wold of Detroit Lakes, Mary Johnnson of Spring, Texas; and special friend, Al Ashley of Newport, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three nephews, two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
