Thief River Falls - Lorena Westerlund, 93, died on Sunday, December 12, 2004 at Northwest Medical Center, CNC Unit in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 17 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with Rev. James Howard officiating. Casket bearers included Mike Greenwald, Rick Greenwald, Roger Skjerven, Ray Nenonen, Chuck Simpson and Barry Rewertz. Honorary casket bearers included Rodney Wayne, John Malwitz and Jim Engelstad. Lorena Viola Greenwald was born on May 11, 1911 near Plummer, the daughter of John and Anna (Christensen) Greenwald. She attended rural school and grew to adulthood in the Plummer area.
Lorena was united in marriage on November 10, 1932 to Gust Westerlund. The couple farmed the Greenwald family farm in Red Lake County until 1961, when they moved into Plummer. They moved to Plummer Senior Housing in 1974, where Lorena stayed until July of 2004. She then chose to move to Thief River Falls at Greenleaf Assisted Living Center. Before leaving Plummer in July, Lorena was honored in the Plummer Centennial Parade as Plummer’s Oldest Female Citizen.
Lorena was a member of the Plummer Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid until the church closed in 1996. She was a member of Plummer Senior Citizens and she kept herself active with quilting, sewing, needlework, reading, playing cards and games and working crossword puzzles. Lorena’s house was always open to many neighborhood kids and they loved to play dress-up with her clothes and jewelry. She loved cooking and baking and for a time was one of the best school cooks the Plummer School ever had.
Lorena was an accomplished poet. Her poetry added a special blessing to many occasions, always portraying her love for God and her fellow man. This would not be complete without mentioning Lorena’s exceptional gift to all in her ability to lift tension with a prayer or a joke or sometimes just that crooked grin and shrug. She will be missed.
Lorena is survived by one son, David (Mable) Westerlund of Hilton Head, S.C.; one grandchild, Colleen (David) Pike of Westbrook, Maine; one brother, Howard (Margaret) Greenwald of Plummer, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gust, on October 23, 1989; her parents; daughter, Mary Lou Westerlund; three infant sons; her brother, Walter Greenwald; and sister, Myrtle Malwitz.
