  Thief River Falls - Helen M. Frances, 79, formerly of Middle River, died on Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at the CNC Unit, Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
  Funeral services were held on Monday, December 13 at the First Lutheran Church in Middle River, with Pastor Curt Matz officiating. Casket bearers included Mark Lundquist, Wayne Smith, Ron Kiesow, Debbie Ornquist, Rick Korpi and Larry Korpi. Honorary casket bearers included Helen’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment was held at Spruce Valley Cemetery in Middle River.
 Helen Mary Frances Toren, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary (Kochowski) Brinkman, was born on May 29, 1925, in Lombard, Ill. She attended school and grew to womanhood in Arlington Heights, Ill., and was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. 
 On February 9, 1945, Helen was united in marriage to Melvin Toren in Waycross, Ga. Following their marriage, the couple moved to a farm in Spruce Valley Township of Marshall County, near Middle River. Melvin passed away on May 30, 1969, and Helen continued her home on the farm until 1972.  She then moved to Thief River Falls where she worked at Arctic Enterprises for several years, and at the Valley Home for seven years. 
 In the mid 1980s, she moved to Middle River, where she was a member of the First Lutheran Church and of the Middle River American Legion Auxiliary.  Helen had resided at the C.N.C. Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls since this past March.
  She is survived by four sons: John (Linda), of Grand Forks, N.D., Gary (Marg), of Alvarado,  Jim, of Middle River, and Dale (Pam), of Thief River Falls; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;  one brother, Walter, of Lincoln, Ill.; four sisters, Marie Carsley of Carol Stream, Ill.,  Lorraine Chalberg of Geneva, Ill.,  and Terry Volmer and Eleanor Holzer, both of St. Charles, Ill.;  in addition to several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
  Helen was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter, Linda Engen; one grandson; two sisters, Lillian and Arlene; and two brothers, Benjamin and Joe.   A00003B2004DC15
