Roseau - Esther Vivian Gilthvedt died on November 21, 2004 at Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau, led by the Rev. Larry Severson, chaplain of Sheltering Oaks. Interment was held at Northwood Cemetery, near Moose River, north of Grygla.
Esther Vivian Hanson, the daughter of Hannah (Schock) and Hans Hanson, was born on June 1, 1919, near Grygla. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith through the ministry of the Grygla Lutheran parish. She attended rural school near her family home.
Vivian married Earl Gilthvedt on April 21, 1938. The couple lived in Prior Lake, Hendrum, Halstad, and Pelican Rapids before moving to Roseau in 1943. Her husband, Earl, started, owned, and operated the Prior Electric Company for 35 years. The Gilthvedts made their home at 121 2nd Ave. SW in Roseau until Vivian entered Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home in December of 2001.
Vivian’s highest values were her family, her faith and her friends. She was a competent and caring homemaker and a participating member of Messiah Lutheran Church as a Sunday School teacher, circle member, and quilter. She remembered that as a newcomer to the Roseau community her first visitors were two women from English Lutheran Church (now Messiah). Thereafter she always found ways to practice and support the church’s life and mission.
Vivian is survived by her two sons, Gary (Mary) of Grygla and Ronald (Elizabeth) of Owatonna; six grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Ron Carlson of Ashby.
Her husband, Earl; daughter, Karen Carlson; her parents; five brothers and five sisters all preceded her in death. A00003B2004DC08
