St. Hilaire - Ruth Budahl, 86, of St. Hilaire, died on Monday, November 29 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 3 at Calvary Lutheran Church in St. Hilaire, with the Rev. Terri Cuppett officiating. Casket bearers included Robert Brua, Charlie Offer, Leonard Nelson, Norman Nelson, Neil Narum, and Stacey Budahl. Interment was held at Fairview Cemetery in rural Erskine.
Ruth G. Nelson was born on July 9, 1918 in McClean County, rural Douglas, N.D., the daughter of Ole E. and Kari (Haugse) Nelson. She attended country school and graduated the salutatorian of her class from high school. After high school, she attended beauty school in Minot, N.D., for one year. She worked briefly as a housekeeper in the area and for a doctor in Crookston before going to work for her sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Irvan Gunter in Erskine. It was there that she met her husband, Hilmar A. Budahl and they were married on January 17, 1941.
After their marriage, Hilmar and Ruth lived in Lockhart, Crookston, Erskine, Thief River Falls and White Earth. They moved to St. Hilaire in 1948 and Hilmar was a teacher and principal of the St. Hilaire school system. Ruth was a cook in the St. Hilaire school system in the late 1960’s until the school closed in the early 1970’s. Hilmar passed away on September 2, 1970. Ruth worked as a cook at Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls until her retirement at the age of 65.
She continued to live in St. Hilaire until suffering a minor stroke in 2001. She then resided at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls, until 2002 when she moved to the Valley Home assisted living facility in Thief River Falls, where she resided until the time of her death.
She was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church for many years.
Survivors include one son, Steven Budahl of Hopkins; one daughter, Marilyn (Charlie) Budahl-Offer of Sarasota, Fla.; two grandchildren; one brother, Leonard Nelson of Douglas, N.D.; and Roseanne Budahl of Walker.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sons, Dennis and Dale; four sisters, Clara, Alice, Myrtle and Helen; and one brother, Norman.
