San Diego, Calif. - Paul Frederick Mellby, 93, of San Diego, Calif., and formerly of Thief River Falls, died on Sunday, November 30, 2005.
Paul Mellby was born February 15, 1912, in Thief River Falls, to Dr. Oscar and Louise Mellby. He married Brunell Erickson in 1942, and she preceded him in death, in 1988.
He graduated from high school in Thief River Falls in 1929. He then attended St. Olaf College and graduated in 1934, with a bachelor of arts degree.
After college, he went to work for Gamble Skogmo department stores in Alexandria. In 1941, he accepted an opportunity to manage a new Gambles store, opening in Angola, Calif. He worked for Gambles for 43 years.
He was a member of Angola Rotary and was a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Angola, Calif., which started in 1954. He sang in the church choir and was very active in other church activities. He went fishing in Canada for 46 years on vacation and enjoyed golf his whole life.
When he was in his 70s and 80s, he worked at Zollner Golf Course on the campus of Tri-State University for 12 years, mowing and taking care of golf carts. He loved to play golf and had four holes-in-one.
He lived in Florida from 1997 to 2005.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Micki Mellby of La Jolla, Calif.; daughter, Paulette Mellby of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Ruth; and three grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine and Jean; and a brother, Erling. There will be no services or calling.
