Aleen was born October 18, 1951 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Joseph P. Smithers II and Virginia L. Smithers. She moved to Thief River Falls, at the age of 9. Her mother married Earl B. Gjernes. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1969.
She began her career as a Respiratory Therapist in Park Rapids. She was employed by the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in St. Cloud and in Kerrville, Texas, since 1987. She was generous to a fault, witty, brilliant, philosophical and flamboyant. For us, her friends, a new life began the moment we met her. She gave us all a piece of herself every time we saw her and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Throughout her life’s travels and trials, she brought a smile to many with her extraordinary sense of humor and wonderful stories. She looked beyond people’s imperfections and always saw golden potential.
Survivors include her brother, Jay (Valerie) of Golden Valley, brother Karl Gjernes of Seattle, Wash.; best friends, Kathy Kleen, Della Commander, Linda Watts and Theresa Faure; two nephews; and her beloved dogs.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and Earl Gjernes and Joseph Smithers II.
